Inaugural ‘World Food Safety Day’ Recognizes Important Work of Food Safety Professionals

Theme is set for June 7 event: ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business’

Your company’s food safety culture is a direct reflection on the importance of food safety within your organization. When everything is operating smoothly, it’s easy to take for granted those food safety professionals who tirelessly build and maintain your food safety program while indirectly helping to support your company’s brand and reputation.

To celebrate the men and women responsible for setting high standards in the food industry, and to help spread the word that everyone can play an important role in food safety, the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization (WHO) and The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have adopted June 7 as World Food Safety Day. The theme for the celebration is ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business.’

Safety Is the Cornerstone of Leading Food Businesses

It is imperative that food stays safe at every stage along the food supply chain - from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, and all the way to preparation and consumption.

With an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses annually, unsafe food is a threat to human health and economies, and it often affects vulnerable and marginalized people, especially women and children, populations affected by conflict, and migrants. An estimated three million people around the world -- in developed and developing countries -- die every year from food and waterborne disease.
