Last year’s major regulation update from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Final Rule for Section 204 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), set into motion some major transformations for food companies throughout the supply chain. While FSMA 204 compliance won’t be required until January 20, 2026, food businesses must start making changes as soon as possible.

FSMA 204 finalized both the recordkeeping requirements for businesses, as well as the Food Traceability List (FTL), which lists out the relevant foods businesses will need to track. Any business that packs, holds, transports, ships, or transforms a food on the FTL will need to capture Traceability Lot Codes (TLCs), Critical Tracking Events (CTEs), and relevant Key Data Elements (KDEs) for where that food is on the supply chain. The FDA’s goal is to improve recall efforts and create a streamlined end-to-end view of the supply chain, so that if a recall needs to happen, both the FDA and impacted businesses can quickly identify, remove, and destroy impacted lots.

Much of the final rule was influenced by industry best practices, and the FDA took into account thousands of public comments before finalizing FSMA 204. As the 2026 deadline for compliance approaches, businesses must prepare themselves for the upcoming shift in business practices.

The good news is industry leaders have already made the transition, and their examples can be beneficial for others. To support businesses in achieving compliance with the new regulations, FoodLogiQ organized a webinar with Beaver Street Fisheries and Chick-fil-A. These two leaders have already implemented FSMA 204’s traceability rules and will shared their valuable insights and best practices during the event.
