The FDA's New Food Safety Dashboard for Tracking FSMA Online


The Food and Drug Administration has released a Food Safety Dashboard to help track Food Safety Modernization Act rules and to measure their progress.

It’s been eight years since Congress passed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act, or FSMA, in an effort to foster a more proactive food safety system. At the heart of that legislation was the government’s obligation to protect consumers, not only through reactive measures, but through prevention as well.

Tracking FSMA Progress

There are seven foundational rules of FSMA that will reach their compliance dates over the next several years. Tracking their impact on the food safety system and measuring progress will be important in refining the FDA’s best practices. To achieve this, the FDA has established a dashboard where metrics against those rules will be published to ensure transparency to the public.  This new Food Safety Dashboard launched on September 30 as part of FDA-TRACK, which is one tool the FDA uses to monitor specific programs through key performance measures and projects.

The Food Safety Dashboard will continue to be populated with additional data to show more FSMA outcomes. The initial metrics are tracking outcomes in the areas of inspections and recalls for three FSMA rules. They include:

The agency anticipates these performance measures will evolve and improve over time as the FDA and its partners continue to implement FSMA and collect more and better-quality data. The agency will update the Food Safety Dashboard on a quarterly basis.

The New Era of Smarter Food Safety

Although FSMA compliance dates are still being rolled out, after nearly a decade it is important to evaluate the progress made within the food industry and look towards next steps.
